Advanced Intrusion Detection Environment

aide is an intrusion detection system for checking the integrity of files. Patch /etc/aide.conf to your needs and start aide the first time with 'aide --init -c /etc/aide.conf'. You'll get a file /var/lib/aide/aide.db.new which you should copy to a save place, e.g. onto a readonly medium. Edit /etc/aide.conf and change the variable 'database' to the new aide.db location. Each following call of aide should be 'aide -c /etc/aide.conf'
